CROSSING OVER
Un peu plus de deux ans après sa dernière exposition à Montréal, Andrew Smith nous propose “CROSSING OVER”, une exposition regroupant une dizaine de peintures sur toile et sur bois sur lesquelles sont suggérés des systèmes résultant d’analyses imaginaires.
« J’aime l’idée qu’une peinture peut être considérée comme un segment encadré du temps. Un événement imaginaire ou trouvé dans la nature susceptible d’être interprété comme un signal pour comprendre ce qui vient ensuite. »
Dans la mesure où ces peintures sont des espaces performatifs, le résultat de leur performance se résume à l’expression ou à la représentation d’un type de comportement. Ainsi, la signification attribuée à la peinture fonctionne en quelque sorte comme une métaphore de la façon dont les choses s’organisent dans la nature. L’artiste tente de codifier certains comportements humains et/ou animaux en systèmes picturaux où la priorité de représentation incarne une tentative de rejoindre le mouvement général des choses.
Note biographique
Andrew Smith est titulaire d’un baccalauréat et d’une maîtrise en art visuel de l'Université d'Ottawa qui lui a octroyé le prix Michel Goulet pour la qualité exceptionnelle de sa thèse. Ses œuvres se retrouvent dans des collections privées et publiques telles que celles de RBC-DEXIA à Londres (R-U), du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères du Canada et de la collection de la Ville d’Ottawa. Andrew Smith vit et travaille à Ottawa et est représenté par la Galerie Dominique Bouffard à Montréal.

CROSSING OVER
A little over two years after his last exhibition in Montreal, Andrew Smith is showing “CROSSING OVER”, an exhibition gathering some ten paintings on canvas and on wood suggesting systems drawn from imaginary analyses.
"I am interested in the idea that a painting can function as a framed section of time. A painting can be an imagined event or occurrence in nature that can be interpreted as a signal for understanding what is to come next."
Insofar as these paintings are performance spaces, the result of their performance boils down to the expression or the the representation of a type of behaviour. The meaning ascribed to painting thus somehow functions as a metaphor for the way things self-organize in nature. The artist is trying to codify some human and/or animal behaviours into pictorial systems in which the priority of representation is given to joining the overall movement of things.
Biographical note
Andrew Smith holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa where he received the Michel Goulet award for the exceptional quality of his thesis. His work can be found in private and public collections including RBC-DEXIA, London, U.K.; the Department of Foreign Affairs, Canada; and the City of Ottawa public art collection. Andrew Smith lives iin Ottawa and is represented by Galerie Dominique Bouffard in Montreal.
