Andrew Smith’s new paintings are spatial meta- phors of the manner or characteristics of how we may relate to bees. The attempt to understand what it might be like to be a bee ought to be- gin with a respectful empathy for everything we do not understand. Abstract painting has, for the artist, the potential to portray an expansive and open-ended realm of reflection on what it might be like to see and feel a place that is of the order of the perceiving body.

Andrew Smith is an Ottawa-based painter. In 1999, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa and is a recent graduate from the MFA program with honorable mention.
